You know you can find rims for sale about anywhere, but what are the right rims? You know, the ones that are the size you need, the style you want…and the price you can afford? Here is some information about tire rims and options, to know before you buy them.
You know what they look like, but what do they do? The edge of the tire sits on the outside edge of the rim, which in turn is mounted on the car or truck. In other words, no rim, no way to get the tire on the vehicle.
Rims can be very plain and utilitarian or bossed up and fancy (or somewhere in between). What you buy depends on what you like and how much you have to spend.
Before you go pricing chevy rims, however, you need to know a little of their characteristics, which follow.
Width – How Wide Do You Need?
The technical definition of the width is the distance between the two flanges. Think of this as the width of the tire that will sit on the rim.
Diameter – How Tall is the Tire?
The diameter of the rim is the distance between the bead seats of the tire. You can also think about the diameter as being the outside of a donut hole. When you’re looking at a rim on a car, it’s the vertical distance up and down.
Rim Type
Here’s where it gets interesting – there are a lot of different rims for sale, in all kinds of metals and styles. Heck, the rims can sometimes be more expensive than the tires that sit on them!
The type of rim you choose depends on the tires you use and the vehicle on which you’ll mount them. And there are components and profiles to a tire rim that you need to consider.
The traditional rims for sale are those which use a safety profile. A safety profile is something that keeps the tire bead close to the rim when conditions are bad. There is a pair of humps that extend inward from one edge to the other bead seat. These rims are generally one-piece in design.
By the time you start looking at rims for sale for trucks and heavy vehicles, you’re talking about rims that have to be assembled. They have a base that mounts to the wheel (and in turn, the axel) and which is removable on one side.
You need to consider tire width when choosing your rims. If your rims are too narrow compared to the tire, your handling can suffer. You might even find that the tires end up distorting sideways if you corner too hard – definitely not safe!
Too wide a rim is just as bad as too narrow. Your ride will suffer from vibration, and your tires can get rubbed when you turn. That’s a recipe for a blowout which can be avoided by choosing the proper size rims.
